Powell Gets 1-Game Suspension For Bid On Shofner

From the AUDL: “Toronto Rush player Geoff Powell has been assessed a one-game suspension by AUDL Commissioner Steve Gordon for a play featuring excessive contact during the East Division Final on Saturday.” The one-game suspension is effective immediately, meaning Powell will not be eligible for Toronto’s semifinal game against the Dallas Roughnecks at Championship Weekend.

Markham Shofner was the recipient of the contact, which took place on a Breeze goal attempt in the 2nd quarter of the Breeze-Toronto East Division Final last weekend. The play occurred with about 6:25 remaining in the 2nd quarter and brought the score to 8-7 when the referee ruled that Shofner had attained full possession of the disc before the contact caused him to let go. The incident caused a social media storm on Twitter and reddit about aggressive play at the elite levels of the sport and what various parties such as coaches, players, referees and leagues can do about it.
